Weather Warning: Heavy Snow and Rain Expected in 29 Provinces of Afghanistan

The Meteorological Department of the Ministry of Transport and Aviation has issued an urgent warning regarding heavy snow and rainfall expected across 29 provinces of Afghanistan.

Weezha Roz-Kabul-The warning is valid for Sunday, 12th of March, and will affect widespread areas from the north to the south and from the east to the west of Afghanistan.

According to the announcement, heavy snowfall and rainfall are predicted in the provinces of Herat, Badghis, Ghor, Faryab, Jowzjan, Balkh, Sar-e Pol, Samangan, Bamyan, Daikundi, Urozgan, Kandahar, Zabul, Paktika, Khost, Ghazni, Paktia, Nangarhar, Kabul, Logar, Maidan Wardak, Parwan, Baghlan, Panjshir, Kapisa, Takhar, Kunar, Nuristan, and Badakhshan.

Snowfall is expected to range from 10 to 25 centimeters in mountainous and highland areas.

Rainfall will average between 15 to 25 millimeters in lower and plain regions.

Wind speeds are expected to reach 50 to 90 kilometers per hour in northern, western, southern, and central provinces.

Meteorological authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel on mountainous roads and in high-risk areas.

There is a possibility of road closures, landslides, and flooding due to these rains and snowfall.

The Meteorological Department has emphasized that “these weather conditions may continue for up to 48 hours.

All relief and local agencies are urged to be on full alert.”

Some environmental experts believe this event is a consequence of climate change in the region and warn that Afghanistan must urgently plan for managing future natural crises.
