Turkey Takes Over Afghanistan Embassy in Ankara from Afghan Diplomats

Weezha Roz-The Embassy of Afghanistan in Ankara announced in a statement that continuous pressure on diplomats and staff of the embassy to take control of it in the years following the events of August 15, 2021, and as a result of continued pressure from the Islamic Emirate on the Turkish government, has led Ankara to halt the embassy’s activities.
The Embassy of Afghanistan in Ankara further added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey recently decided to terminate the mission of the ambassador and several diplomats from the republic era at this embassy.
This decision, made within the framework of the host country’s authority and based on the Vienna Conventions, applies to the diplomats of this embassy.
Accordingly, all diplomats from the republic era at this embassy have concluded their missions as of February 6, 2025, and were handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey this afternoon.
In its statement, the Embassy of Afghanistan in Ankara emphasized that it had made significant efforts in several areas, including securing humanitarian aid for the needy people inside Afghanistan, promoting trade and empowering the private sector, supporting education and higher education, and addressing the needs of Afghan students.
The statement also mentioned that cultural programs, recognition and encouragement of civil society and human rights activists, youth, and students, especially Afghan girls and women, were other activities of the embassy.
Additionally, the Embassy of Afghanistan highlighted that Turkey’s humanitarian aid to Afghanistan has significantly increased, including aid delivered via the Niki Railway and the activities of over 70 Turkish charitable organizations in Afghanistan.
The embassy also added that in the field of higher education, better coordination for student affairs had been established, and for the first time, the possibility of conducting the TR-YÖS entrance exams in Afghanistan’s national languages for 2025 has been created, providing an opportunity for talented students from Afghanistan to study at Turkish universities.
The statement concluded by emphasizing that the leadership and diplomatic staff of the embassy have always strived to ensure that the Afghan Embassy in Ankara remains free of any political and factional activities.
Meanwhile, Zaker Jalali, a prominent political member of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has confirmed on his X account that the diplomats of the Islamic Emirate have started their work at the Afghanistan Embassy in Ankara.
He stated that changes in the diplomatic staff of embassies are a common practice in diplomatic missions of countries.
He mentioned that the diplomats of the Islamic Emirate are working with full transparency, responsibility, and commitment to provide consular services and represent the country at this embassy.
