Shock in Somali Society: Renowned Poet Joins Al-Shabaab’s Armed Propaganda! RPG Fire by Former Literary Figure

Al-Shabaab, the active militant group in Somalia, has released a promotional video in which Abwan Abdiwahid Ali Gumma'id, a prominent and veteran Somali poet, is seen firing a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) alongside hundreds of trained militants from the group.

Weezha Roz-Kabul–This literary figure, once celebrated as a symbol of Somali culture and poetry before joining Al-Shabaab in late 2024, has now become one of the group’s propaganda tools.

According to media reports, the video released by Al-Shabaab claims that the fighters in the footage have recently completed the group’s military training courses.

Gumma’id’s presence among armed fighters has sent shockwaves through Somali society, particularly within cultural and literary circles, as he was once known for his poetry that represented peace and unity.

Now, he has become a symbol of the tragic shift of a cultural figure towards extremism.

Security analysts warn that Al-Shabaab’s use of well-known cultural figures like Gumma’id is part of the group’s strategy to recruit new forces and legitimize its violent actions.

A Somali affairs expert told AFP, “This video shows that Al-Shabaab is trying to influence public opinion by using the popularity of influential figures.

Transforming a beloved poet into a fighter sends a dangerous message to the community, especially vulnerable youth.”

Gumma’id’s joining Al-Shabaab has raised concerns about the radicalization of intellectuals and artists in Somalia.

Local sources report that after months of isolation and a shift in his ideological stance, he suddenly appeared among Al-Shabaab supporters.

Former colleagues of the poet attribute this change to his “social isolation and deep despair,” suggesting these factors were key drivers behind his decision.

This video comes at a time when Al-Shabaab’s attacks on Somali government positions and international coalition forces have increased in recent months.

Observers believe the group is trying to solidify its position as an “alternative power” in Somalia by showcasing its military strength and recruiting high-profile figures.
