Return and Tragic Death of an Afghan Migrant: Migration, Homeland, and the Harsh Realities of Two Worlds

Kabul-The killing of an Afghan youth in the U.S. state of Texas has once again brought the issues of migration, return, and the psychological and security challenges facing Afghan migrants into the spotlight. Riss Saylab, a young man from Khost province and a former member of the KPF special forces under the previous government, had migrated to the U.S., later returned to Afghanistan, and then went back to America where he was recently shot dead outside his home.

Weezharoz-According to local sources, the incident occurred on Sunday, June 1 (11 Jawza), in Texas. It is reported that the assailant(s) targeted Saylab after he received a friendly call and as he stepped outside his home.

Further official details have yet to be released by U.S. authorities.

During his stay in Afghanistan, Saylab had shared videos describing the country’s security situation as satisfactory.

In one video filmed in Khost at night, he said: “I’m in Setkando now what better security could you ask for, Afghans?”
News of his death has sparked widespread reactions on social media, raising questions about the safety of Afghan migrants, the psychological toll of displacement, and the often-overlooked hardships of life abroad.

Afghan government officials have reiterated calls for return, stressing the general amnesty and prevailing stability in the country.

Still, Saylab’s tragic death stands as a stark symbol of the dual, often painful, realities faced by thousands of Afghan migrants striving to build a better life across two very different worlds.
