Inauguration of Urban Refugees Support Unit (URSU)

In the closing remarks, Mr. Muhammad Talha Mahmood-Federal Minister, Ministry of States & Frontier Regions commended the efforts of the Commissionerate for Afghan Refugees,

Weezharoz-Federal Minister, Ministry of States & Frontier Regions Mr. Talha Mahmood, Commissioner for Afghan Refugees, KP Muhammad Abbas Khan, First Secretary German Embassy Ms. Julia Klein and Head of Project, GIZ-EHS Ms. Evelyn Maib-Chatré, inaugurated the Urban Refugees Support Unit (URSU) at District Haripur.

In the opening remarks, Muhammad Abbas Khan, Commissioner for Afghan Refugees, KP stated that the Urban Refugees Support Units at District Peshawar, Mardan, and Haripur aim to provide assistance and support to Urban Refugees and connect them to service providers and operate on the basis of a referral system. He thanked the German Government along with UNHCR for their continued support to facilitate the Afghan Refugees and Host Community.

Ms. Julia Klein, First Secretary German Embassy thanked the Commissioner for Afghan Refugees, KP, and appreciated the efforts of the Government of Pakistan in managing the largest protracted refugee situation. She also admired the initiative and was hopeful that it will minimize the grievances of Afghan refugees.

In the closing remarks, Mr. Muhammad Talha Mahmood-Federal Minister, Ministry of States & Frontier Regions commended the efforts of the Commissionerate for Afghan Refugees, KP, and UNHCR, for their unprecedented support in managing the huge caseload of Afghan Refugees for more than four decades. He also appreciated GIZ and added that in the past there was no mechanism for addressing the needs of urban refugees but with the support of EHS-GIZ, Urban Refugees Support Units were established in various Districts of KP. In addition, he emphasized the need for extending this initiative to other Districts of KP.
