Trudeau referenced Trump’s idea of turning Canada into the “51st state” of the U.S., stating, “Trump intends to gain access to Canada’s strategic mineral resources and believes the easiest way to achieve this is by absorbing our country. This is a real issue.”
These comments came in response to recent threats by Trump to impose heavy tariffs on Canadian exports to the U.S. if Canada does not cooperate in strengthening border security.
Trump announced that a 25% tariff would be applied to all Canadian exports to the U.S., except for energy exports, which would face a 10% tax.
Trump had previously suggested the annexation of Canada on his social media platform, Truth, and in interviews with reporters. He has even referred to Trudeau as “Governor Trudeau.”
It appears that Trump is seeking access to Canada’s strategic mineral resources and views annexation as a straightforward way to achieve this goal.
