Increasing Factionalism Within Pakistan’s Military

Weezha Roz– Internal conflicts within Pakistan’s military continue to escalate, with power struggles among senior military officials growing more intense. These tensions have been rising ever since the arrest of Lt. Gen.
Faiz Hameed, and recent reports indicate further divisions, particularly around Lt. Gen. Asif Ghafoor, the former spokesperson of Pakistan’s military who recently retired.
According to sources, Lt. Gen. Asim Munir, the current Chief of Army Staff, has allegedly ordered the freezing of assets belonging to Gen.
Asif Ghafoor. Ghafoor, who accumulated significant wealth during his service, has reportedly moved his family to Scotland and purchased a large estate there.
He is said to be in the process of transferring his assets from Pakistan to Scotland, intending to settle there permanently after his retirement.
Sources suggest that Asim Munir is concerned that Ghafoor might speak out about corruption and illegal activities within the military once he leaves Pakistan.
As a result, Munir is attempting to deter Ghafoor through threats and intimidation, but it is believed that he will allow Ghafoor to leave the country provided he receives certain guarantees.
Meanwhile, Lt. Gen.
Nadeem Anjum, another senior military official, has moved his family and assets to Canada after providing the necessary guarantees to Munir.
Gen. Tariq, who had been barred from leaving Pakistan for two years, has now reportedly been granted permission to travel to the United States, where his family resides.
His daughter, who is married to a U.S. Marine, also lives in the United States.
Furthermore, Lt. Gen Asif Yaseen, who was previously permitted to leave Pakistan, is now allowed to relocate to London, where he owns a mansion and his family currently resides.
Experts suggest that the ongoing infighting among Pakistan’s generals highlights the deep-rooted corruption within the military ranks, where senior officials have amassed significant wealth by exploiting their positions.
The military’s control over the country’s resources has played a significant role in transforming Pakistan into one of the poorest nations globally, while its military elites continue to abuse their power.
As Gen. Asim Munir nears retirement, the question arises as to who will inherit his “guarantees” and who will take over once he leaves Pakistan.
The network of wealth, power, and corruption among Pakistan’s military generals continues to grow, contributing to the country’s ongoing political and economic instability.
