Illegal Detention of Mehrang Baloch in Pakistan Raises Concerns Over Increased Suppression of Baloch Activists and Denial of Access to Lawyers and Family

It has been over 38 hours since the illegal detention of Mehrang Baloch, a prominent Baloch activist, in Pakistan, yet security authorities continue to block his access to legal representation and his family. This action comes amidst alarming reports of ongoing arbitrary detentions across Balochistan city.

Weezha Roz-Islamabad-Local sources and human rights organizations have reported that Mehrang Baloch, a key figure in peaceful protest campaigns in Balochistan, was detained without a valid judicial order.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have called for his immediate release and the cessation of targeted detentions of Baloch activists.

Mehrang Baloch’s family has stated that they are unaware of his whereabouts and are concerned about potential physical and psychological pressure being applied to him.

Independent reports from Balochistan indicate that dozens of other civil society activists and family members of protesters have been detained in recent days.

Pakistani authorities have not yet responded to these developments.
