Historic Step Toward Energy Self-Sufficiency: Afghanistan Launches Major Wind and Solar Power Project in Herat

Herat-In a landmark move for Afghanistan’s energy sector, the country has launched its first-ever wind and solar power generation project in Herat province, with a total capacity of 48.2 megawatts 43.2 MW from wind and 5 MW from solar energy. This initiative marks a pivotal step toward national energy independence.

Weezharoz-The project, which represents the first phase of a broader 200 MW wind energy development plan, was inaugurated in a formal ceremony attended by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs; Dr. Abdul Bari Omar, CEO of Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS); Minister of Economy Qari Din Mohammad Hanif; Herat Governor Mawlawi Noor Ahmad Islam Jar; Turkish government officials; representatives of Turkish company 77; religious scholars; local traders; industrialists; and technical engineers.

Speakers highlighted the project’s significance for sustainable development, environmental protection, climate change mitigation, and the path toward energy self-reliance.

This Herat-based project marks the fourth major domestic power project launched in the past two months, following solar energy projects in Nangarhar, Balkh, and Laghman provinces.

Additionally, significant electricity grid expansion efforts have recently been initiated in Helmand, Kandahar, Uruzgan, and Zabul provinces.

Officials believe that Afghanistan’s geographic advantage especially in wind-rich areas positions the country to significantly boost domestic power production and support long-term economic growth.
