Historic Advancement in Afghan Healthcare: First Specialized Eye Surgery Successfully Performed at Martyr Sardar Mohammad Daoud Khan Complex
In a historic step for Afghanistan's healthcare system, the first specialized eye surgery (Buckling procedure) was successfully carried out with the collaboration of Indian specialists at the Martyr Sardar Mohammad Daoud Khan Hospital complex. This significant medical achievement marks a remarkable transformation in the country's healthcare services, eliminating the need for patient referrals abroad.
Weezha Roz-Kabul–According to the Ministry of National Defense, this breakthrough was the result of direct coordination between the Minister of National Defense, Mawlavi Mohammad Yaqub “Majahid,” and the Commander of Military Health Affairs, Dr. Mohammad Tahir “Ahrar.”
These two senior officials invited a team of Indian specialists, making advanced eye care services available to military personnel and their families.
Dr. Mohammad Tahir “Ahrar” emphasized:
“This collaboration not only enhances the quality of healthcare services but also enriches the knowledge and experience of Afghan surgeons through practical training provided by the Indian specialists.”
The first Buckling procedure was conducted under the supervision of an experienced Indian surgeon, with the participation of Afghan ophthalmologists.
This team had previously undergone intensive training under the guidance of Indian specialists.
Previously, patients requiring such complex eye surgeries were sent abroad, which involved heavy costs and administrative challenges.
Now, with the successful execution of this surgery in Afghanistan, reliance on foreign medical centers has been reduced, and the country has taken a significant step towards self-sufficiency in healthcare.
The Minister of National Defense described this achievement as a symbol of “strengthening regional cooperation and enhancing domestic capacities,” adding, “We are committed to developing healthcare infrastructure and seeking international cooperation to serve both the people and the armed forces.”
Buckling Procedure: A specialized eye treatment technique used to repair retinal detachment by placing a silicone band around the eye.
