Fifth Round of Iran–U.S. Nuclear Talks Begins in Rome Amid Rising Tensions
Rome-As regional and international concerns grow over Iran’s nuclear program, the fifth round of indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States has officially begun in Rome, Italy, with mediation by Oman. The talks are led by Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Steve Witkoff, the U.S. President’s Special Representative for Middle East Affairs.

Weezharoz-At the center of the dispute is Iran’s uranium enrichment activities. The United States is demanding a complete halt to enrichment, while Tehran insists it has the right to peaceful nuclear energy under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Iran maintains its program is strictly peaceful and compliant with international regulations.
Tehran has also reiterated its call for the lifting of economic sanctions, which it says have severely impacted the country’s economy.
Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi is playing a key mediating role, and the selection of Rome as the host city was jointly agreed upon by both Washington and Tehran at Oman’s suggestion.
The Italian government has provided logistical support for the talks.
Despite the resumption of negotiations, major hurdles remain.
Disagreements persist over uranium enrichment limits, the scope of sanctions relief, and guarantees for the enforcement of any future agreement.
Additionally, recent Israeli threats to target Iran’s nuclear facilities, and Tehran’s vow to retaliate, have heightened tensions and cast a shadow over the diplomatic process.
While the outcome remains uncertain, the continuation of dialogue reflects a mutual interest in de-escalation and a potential path toward a comprehensive diplomatic solution.
If an agreement is reached, observers expect some sanctions to be lifted, with Iran’s nuclear program subject to international monitoring.
If talks fail, however, the risk of regional confrontation could escalate.
The international community is closely watching the proceedings, hopeful that diplomacy will prevail over confrontation.
