Escalating Tensions Over the Panama Canal: Trump’s Demand for Free Passage and Panama’s Firm Response

Washington-On April 26, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump reignited a contentious debate over the Panama Canal by asserting that American military and commercial vessels should be granted toll-free access through both the Panama and Suez Canals. In a Truth Social post, Trump emphasized that these strategic waterways would not exist without U.S. involvement and directed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to formalize this demand.

Weezharoz-This statement follows a series of remarks by President Trump expressing dissatisfaction with the current toll structures and management of the Panama Canal.

He has previously suggested that the U.S. might consider reclaiming control over the canal if Panama does not adjust its policies to align with American interests.

In response, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino firmly rejected Trump’s assertions, stating unequivocally that “the canal is and will remain Panama’s.”

He underscored Panama’s sovereignty over the canal, highlighting its successful administration since the handover from the U.S. in 1999 under the Torrijos-Carter Treaties.

President Mulino also addressed concerns about foreign influence, particularly allegations of Chinese control over the canal.

He clarified that there is no foreign interference in the canal’s operations and reaffirmed Panama’s commitment to maintaining its neutrality and sovereignty.

The escalating rhetoric from President Trump and the steadfast stance of Panama’s leadership have heightened diplomatic tensions between the two nations.

Analysts warn that any attempts by the U.S. to unilaterally alter the canal’s governance could have significant geopolitical repercussions and disrupt global trade routes.

As the situation develops, the international community watches closely, recognizing the Panama Canal’s critical role in global commerce and the importance of respecting international agreements and national sovereignty.
