Afghanistan and Uzbekistan Extend Strategic Railway Agreement, Paving the Way for Enhanced Regional Connectivity
Kabul-In a significant move to bolster regional trade and infrastructure, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan have extended their agreement for the operation and maintenance of the Hairatan–Mazar-i-Sharif railway line through 2026.

Weezharoz-This extension was formalized during a meeting between Afghan Deputy Minister of Public Works for Railways, Mohammad Ishaq Sahibzada, and Uzbekistan’s Minister of Transport, Ilhom Mahkamov, held in Tashkent from January 21 to 23, 2025.
Key Highlights of the Agreement: Continued Operation by Sogdiana Trans:Sogdiana Trans LLC, a subsidiary of Uzbekistan Railways, will maintain its role as the operator of the 75-kilometer Hairatan–Mazar-i-Sharif railway.
This line, constructed in 2010, serves as a vital trade corridor between the two nations.
Accelerated Restoration Efforts:Both parties have agreed to expedite the restoration of goods delivery to the Mazar-i-Sharif terminal station, aiming to enhance the efficiency of cargo transportation along this route.
Training Initiatives:The agreement includes provisions for training Afghan railway specialists, fostering capacity building and knowledge transfer within Afghanistan’s railway sector.
Advancements in the Trans-Afghan Railway Project:Discussions also encompassed the Trans-Afghan Railway project, a collaborative initiative among Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan.
This ambitious project aims to connect Central Asia with South Asia, facilitating trade from Mazar-i-Sharif through Kabul to Peshawar.
Uzbekistan has committed to financing the feasibility studies for this 573-kilometer railway, with construction anticipated to commence in 2025.
Strategic Implications:The extension of the Hairatan–Mazar-i-Sharif railway agreement and the progress on the Trans-Afghan Railway project underscore a shared commitment to enhancing regional connectivity.
