A Major Step in Regional Cooperation: India and Sri Lanka Launch Major Development Projects

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe elevated bilateral ties to a new level during a joint press conference in New Delhi, announcing the launch of several large-scale development projects in Sri Lanka.

Weezharoz-New Delhi – Modi referred to Sri Lanka as a “true friend and strategic partner” and revealed plans for multiple infrastructure development initiatives aimed at enhancing the country’s economic growth.

The projects include:Upgrading Ports, Railways, and Energy Networks in the northern and eastern regions of Sri Lanka, strengthening regional connectivity and trade.

Establishing an Undersea Power Transmission Network between India and Sri Lanka to address the country’s energy needs.

Providing Low-Interest Loans for the reconstruction of hotels and historical attractions in Sri Lanka, following the recent economic crisis.

Launching IT Training Centers, funded by India, to empower Sri Lankan youth with technological skills.

In his speech, Modi emphasized that the India-Sri Lanka relationship is rooted in shared history, culture, and values, and expressed India’s commitment to further strengthening these ties through economic and security cooperation.

President Wickremesinghe expressed gratitude for India’s support during Sri Lanka’s recent crises, stating that these projects would not only revitalize the country’s economy but also ensure regional stability.

These agreements come at a time when Sri Lanka is seeking foreign investment following the unprecedented economic crisis of 2022.
