6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Eastern Afghanistan
Fawzea sediqi- According to international seismological reports, today (June 27, 2026) at 6:05 PM local time, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale struck the mountainous Jurm district in Badakhshan, eastern Afghanistan. The epicenter was recorded at a depth of 201 kilometers, which is considered the primary factor significantly reducing surface-level damage.

Epicenter Location: 48 kilometers south of Jurm district, 174 kilometers east of Kunduz city (Coordinates: 70.7662°E, 36.4349°N).
UTC Recorded Time: 13:34:52 (4.5 hours behind Afghanistan local time).
Focal Depth: 201 kilometers (classified as a deep earthquake, which attenuates destructive surface waves).
Analysis of the Earthquake:
Due to the great depth of the hypocenter, seismic energy has been dissipated within the Earth’s subsurface layers.
Based on experiences from similar events, this earthquake is not expected to cause widespread structural destruction or mountain landslides in the region.
However, tremors may be felt as mild shaking in distant cities, including parts of Tajikistan and Pakistan.
Damage and Relief Status:
As of the time of this report (29 minutes after the event), no official reports of casualties, injuries, or infrastructure damage have been issued by local authorities in Badakhshan or Afghanistan’s disaster management agencies. Given the significant depth and the epicenter’s distance from populated areas, the likelihood of serious material damage is assessed as very low.
End of Report.
