Death Toll of Journalists in Gaza Reaches 220; Gaza Becomes Frontline for Media Martyrdom

Gaza-The Government Media Office in Gaza has announced that with the death of Hassan Majdi Abu Wardeh, head of the Barq Gaza News Agency, the number of journalists killed in the ongoing war has risen to 220. This alarming figure marks one of the highest media casualty rates in any modern conflict of the 21st century.

Weezharoz-The continued killing of Palestinian journalists since the start of the war in October 2023 has raised serious concerns over the systematic targeting of media personnel by the Israeli military.

Many of the slain journalists were clearly identified as press, wearing visibly marked “PRESS” vests, yet were still targeted while covering events on the ground.

In a statement, the Gaza Media Office condemned the killings as a blatant violation of international law and press freedom, calling on global bodies such as the International Federation of Journalists, Arab media associations, and human rights organizations to condemn what it described as a “systematic massacre.”

Experts warn that targeting journalists not only deprives the public of access to truthful reporting but also represents a broader effort to silence the realities of war.

While the United Nations and several international bodies have previously called for independent investigations into journalist deaths in Gaza, no effective response has yet been provided by Israeli authorities.

As the conflict continues, concerns over the safety of journalists and the persistence of violence against the media remain on the rise.
